Who Will Hit U.S. TV

Burton Cromer—vice president of BBC Direct, which is releasing the first season of the British SF series Doctor Who on DVD—told SCI FI Wire that the BBC made the unusual decision to release the DVD before the show had found a broadcast outlet in the United States. But he added that the show will find its way onto American TV one way or another.

"It will be going on television," Cromer said in an interview. "There're lots of discussions going on, and I can't really talk about that. This is a unique situation, really, because there are so many fans of Doctor Who ... already out there, and we were just finding [that] people were getting ... second-hand copies or copies from the U.K. ... We really wanted fans to get the best, most complete version in the United States as [soon] we possibly could. So we made the decision, and it is unique, to go ahead of the TV broadcast with the DVD and to release the gift set of the DVD basically within two and a half to three months [after] the U.K. [version]."

Since its premiere earlier this year, the updated Doctor Who has been a smash hit in Great Britain, and U.S. fans have been clamoring for a way to see the series legally Stateside. There's no downside to a U.S. DVD release, even if the show has yet to be seen on American TV, Cromer added. "The good news for us is that we already have that loyal fan base, but then when the show does broadcast in the U.S., we'll have a whole new fan base, because it's just a new Doctor Who: very exciting, but still the great stories and as great as the old Doctor Who," he said.

Doctor Who is gearing up production of its second season in the United Kingdom, which will appear next year. A special Christmas episode, meanwhile, will air this month. The U.S. DVD will feature the entire first season of Doctor Who, starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. It hits stores on Feb. 14, 2006.

Boredom Relief - Games, Optical Illusions, Magic Tricks and more fun activities

from Kim Komando's Cool Site of the Day -

"Ever get bored?

I rarely have time to be bored. When I'm not working, I'm spending time with my family or jogging.

But the other day, I started to feel the stirrings of boredom. It was the longest five minutes of my life! Determined never to be bored again, I hopped on the Net to find a solution.

I found Blifaloo, a site dedicated to relieving boredom. There are cartoons, riddles, illusions and jokes to keep you amused. My favorites are the magic tricks. If I were bored more often, I'd take up magic as a hobby.

If you find yourself with a few spare minutes, stop by Blifaloo. It is guaranteed to keep you occupied."

How to Add Google Videos to Your Blogger Blog

I only link to the videos. The screenshots are just saved images which are uploaded via Blogger's image tool. In Blogger posts, the images are actually thumbnails that normally link to larger versions of the images. I change the thumbnail link to point to the video instead of to a larger image and voila!

Copy the URL of the video page you want to link to.

Save one of the screenshots from the video page.

Create a post in Blogger and use the image tool to upload the screenshot you saved in the previous step.

Edit the html of the image link in the post. Select the destination of the image link and paste in the Google video page URL as a replacement.

Fan Trek Film Finnishes First

A spoof of Star Trek has become Finland's most-viewed movie, relying on free distribution over the Internet to reach more than 3 million viewers in less than two months, the Reuters news service reported.

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is a full-length feature in Finnish with English subtitles that pits The Next Generation-like ships against Babylon 5-like ships in a space battle for domination of the galaxy. It was made by a group of students and other amateur filmmakers with a bare-bones budget and a few home computers to create elaborate special effects.

According to the Finnish Internet hosting firm Magentasites Oy, which is helping to distribute Star Wreck, 2.92 million copies have been downloaded from the film's Web site since Oct. 1, and an estimated 600,000 copies have gone out through various mirror sites, the wire service reported.

Fla. Teacher Pleads Guilty in Sex Case

TAMPA, Fla. - A female teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday to having sex with a 14-year-old student, avoiding prison as part of a plea agreement.

Debra Lafave, 25, whose sensational case made tabloid headlines, will serve three years of house arrest and seven years' probation. She pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery.

The former Greco Middle School reading teacher apologized during the hearing, saying "I accept full responsibility for my actions."

The boy told investigators the two had sex in a classroom at the school, located in Temple Terrace near Tampa, in her Riverview town house and once in a vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove them around Marion County.

The boy told investigators Lafave told him her marriage was in trouble and that she was aroused by the fact that having sex with him was not allowed. He said he and Lafave, a newlywed at the time, got to know each other on their way back from a class trip to SeaWorld Orlando in May 2004.

If convicted at trial in Hillsborough County, she could have faced up to 15 years in prison on each count.

The plea agreement also was designed to resolve similar charges in Marion County, where Lafave was scheduled to appear in court Dec. 8. But prosecutor Ric Ridgeway said his office wants to speak with the boy's family first.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Wayne Timmerman said LaFave also will forever lose her teaching certificate, must register with the state as a sexual predator, may not have any contact with children including the victim, and will not be allowed to profit from the sale of her story or personal appearances.

The victim's mother said afterward that the public scrutiny had taken its toll on the family, and they just wanted to see it all end.

"If we had continued along this path, this would have followed him forever," said the mother, whose name was being withheld to protect her son's identity. "My prayer is that he can leave this behind him and go on and be a happy, healthy young man."

After Tuesday's hearing, Lafave's attorney, John Fitzgibbons, said the plea was "a fair resolution of this case." Asked how she felt afterward, Lafave said "tired."

Fitzgibbons said in July that plea negotiations had broken off because prosecutors insisted on prison time, which he said would be too dangerous for someone as attractive as Lafave. He said then that she planned to plead insanity at trial, claiming emotional stress kept her from knowing right from wrong.

Piper Quits Doctor Who

Billie Piper, the pop star-turned-actress, has quit her role as Rose Tyler on the BBC's hit SF series Doctor Who, the U.K. tabloid newspaper the Daily Mirror reported. Citing an anonymous source, the newspaper said that Piper, 23, would leave the show in its upcoming third season because she doesn't want to become typecast.

Piper's departure follows that of original Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston, who quit after the first season, to be replaced by David Tennant. Piper has already shot the show's second season with Tennant, as well as a Christmas special.

The BBC has reportedly launched a search for a new actress to replace Piper. Piper won a British best actress award for her portrayal of Rose.

The second season of Doctor Who begins airing in the United Kingdom next year.

Meanwhile, the BBC Web site has posted a new image of the show's Cybermen.

Save King's Quest IX!

Are you familiar with the King's Quest fan game that has been in the works since 2002? Over 40 people have worked on it. Programmers, writers, artists, animators, actors -- all because they loved King's Quest. When finished, the game was going to be made available to anyone who wanted it, for free, via their website (www.kqix.com).

It was due to be released this December, but just a few weeks ago, Vivendi Universal Games (who now owns Sierra, and thus the rights to King's Quest) issued a cease & desist letter to the fans making the game. They were forced to shut down.

Some King's Quest fans, myself included, have joined forces in an effort to save the game. We've just recently launched a website.

http://www.savekqix.org

We're asking everyone to send an email to Vivendi, and we've made it very easy to do so via our website. There's an email link there -- you click it, and up pops a new email all ready to go. All you have to do is hit send. It literally only takes 10 seconds.

Whedon: Buffy Lives In Comics

Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, told fans on the Whedonesque.com fan Web site that he will be continuing the story of the Slayer in a series of Dark Horse comics, which he will write. "Speaking of Dark Horse Comics, they are starting a new Buffy comic, and as I understand it, it will take place after the end of Buffy and Angel and be canon in the Buffy world. And I understand it that way 'cause I'M WRITING IT. I'm kicking off the book with a four-issue arc that finds Buffy—you guessed it—living in Italy with The Immortal. ...Then I'll be overseeing the book more closely, to make sure it remains true."

Whedon also said that he's still working on a TV movie featuring the character of Spike (played by James Marsters). "The infamous Spike movie. Still haven't finalized anything, but I feel that very soon I'll be able to go to James and say something a lot more interesting than 'Wouldn't it be cool if ... .' 'Course, I just hope he's free some time this decade. See how my peeps is all actifying!" Marsters currently has a recurring role in The WB's Smallville.

Whedon, an avowed fan of comics, is no stranger to that world, having authored the Buffy-related Fray series for Dark Horse and the Astonishing X-Men series for Marvel.

Coaches Curing Kids' Cancer

from Kim Komando's Cool Site of the Day

In 2003, after fighting the disease for half his life, Killian Owen lost his battle with leukemia. He was only 9. His story is heartbreaking.

Killian's parents are determined to help other families avoid the loss they experienced. So they set up Coaches Curing Kids' Cancer, an organization that raises money for cancer research.

The way it works is simple. Teams often give coaches a gift at the end of the season. Coaches Curing Kids' Cancer asks that teams donate instead. It distributes the donation to a local children's hospital or cancer research center.

If your children are on a sports team, keep Coaches Curing Kids' Cancer in mind. But, of course, anyone can make a donation.
