What I want for Christmas continued

Ok, so I'm probably not gonna get the guitar (see below).

How about an internal DVD burner capable of doing +/- (I have both kinds of blank media)?

I'm borrowing an external one now that only connects at USB 1.1 speed and it is sloooooooow.

Took one hour and 40 minutes to burn a 2.8 GB DVD today. Ouch.

Anyone have a brand that they own and would recommend?

Sexsomnia? I don't think so. This has to be BS.

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian province of Ontario plans to review a court decision that acquitted a man of sexual assault charges because he suffers from "sexsomnia" and was asleep at the time of the incident.

The Office of the Attorney General, which oversees the province's prosecutions, said on Thursday it needs to research its options for an appeal because of the strange circumstances of the case.

"This matter will be carefully considered to determine our next steps," said Brendan Crawley, a spokesman for the Attorney General.

Jan Luedecke, 33, was acquitted of sexual assault charges on Tuesday because he said he was asleep during the attack.

A sleep expert testified that Luedecke suffers from a disorder that causes sexsomnia -- involuntary sexual behavior during sleep -- which he had experienced before.

The court heard that Luedecke and the female victim met at a party. She testified she fell asleep and woke up to find Luedecke having sex with her. She pushed him away and called the police.

Luedecke confessed to police after he discovered was still wearing a condom and realized he had had sex.

Canadian media reported that the victim left the courtroom in tears when the verdict was read, and said she would take the case to the highest court possible.

The Crown has 30 days to present its appeal.

Fireproofing Your Christmas Tree

1. Once you get home with your new tree, get a saw and IMMEDIATELY make a fresh cut at the base of the tree trunk. This is mandatory for any tree you’ve bought. Make your cut about an inch above the bottom of the trunk.
2. Next, you’ll need a place to store your tree for a few days before taking it into your home, as it takes a few days for the preservative to fully saturate the tree. An ideal place would be the carport/garage or possible a balcony for apartment dwellers.
3. Immediately after making your cut a the bottom of the tree, mix the homemade preservative as follows:
Into a 2-gallon (or 1-gallon jugs) bucket, add HOT WATER from the kitchen tap. Fill the bucket to within an inch or so of the top, then add the following ingredients:
...2 cups of Karo syrup
...2 ounces of liquid chlorine bleach
...2 pinches of Epsom salt
...½ teaspoon of Boraxo
...1 teaspoon of chelated iron (pronounced KEY-lated)
Stir these ingredients thoroughly in the bucket(s), them IMMEDIATELY stand the trunk of the tree in this solution. Leave the tree in the solution containers for a day of two until you’re ready to take it indoors and decorate it.
4. After taking the tree indoors, make sure to put it in a stand with a water reservoir at the bottom. Once the tree is secured in it’s “final resting place”, get the bucket containing your preservative and FILL THE RESERVOIR IN THE TREE STAND TO THE TOP.
5. Last but not least, EVERY DAY, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, MAKE SURE THE RESERVOIR IS KEPT FILLED TO THE TOP WITH THE PRESERVATIVE SOLUTION.
That’s all there is to it. If you follow these steps faithfully, you will have a completely FIREPROOFED Christmas Tree to enjoy throughout the holidays.
And, for those inquisitive minds, here’s an explanation of why and how it works.
The Karo syrup provides the SUGAR, and it is only in the presence of sugar that tremendous amounts of water will be taken up by the exposed tissue at the base of the trunk. Without the sugar, only the smallest amount of water will be absorbed. However, in the presence of sugar, you can expect more than 1½ gallons of the solution to be absorbed by the tree during a 10-14 day period.
But there’s more. Thanks to the boron you have supplied (in the Boraxo), the water and sugar will be moved to every needle and branch of the tree. Remember, boron is what makes sugar move, not only in trees, but vegetables, fruits and even houseplants.
Then, there’s the Epsom salt and the chelated iron. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and magnesium (together with iron) are the center molecules in the process we know as chlorophyll production. By making the magnesium and iron available to the tree, you’re assuring yourself of green needles, even if the tree was not sprayed at the tree farm before being shipped to the market.
But what about the chlorine bleach? Chlorine stops a mold from forming when water and sugar stand for any period of time. Here, the chlorine stops the mold from forming in the bucket and the reservoir of the tree stand where your preservative sits.

Benefits
1. Your tree will be SOAKING WET with water. In fact, at least 800% more water than when the tree was growing in the forest! This in turn prevents the tree from becoming a fire hazard.
2. No needles will drop, no matter what variety of evergreen you choose to display in your home. At the same time, the tree will give off a fragrance like that which you’ve sensed while walking through a forest of evergreens of strolling through the Christmas tree lot.
3. Finally, make the test yourself. When the holidays are over and the tree is taken down and moved outdoors, cut one of the branches off. Move away from the tree and try to light the branch with a match. IT WON’T BURN!!! So, take the time to fireproof your live evergreen tree this Christmas and enjoy a safe holiday!!!

BlameBush! Because Bush is to Blame for Everything.

Happy AIDS Day!

Today is World AIDS Day, a time for the people of Earth to open their hearts and their bankbooks for Kofi Annan, and beg his forgiveness for any other problems he can blame on the selfishness of Western Civilization. But don’t expect an apology from Bush for the billions who died while he handed out huge tax breaks to the wealthiest one percent of Americans.

AIDS, or "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome" is the depletion of the human immune system by the HIV virus. When the Reagan Administration unleashed the virus in the early 1980’s, homosexuals, prostitutes, and intravenous drug users were the hardest hit. Half the Democrat Party voter base was wiped out literally overnight. In the years that followed, the disease quickly spread to developing nations unprepared to handle such an epidemic. Due largely in part to Republican greed and inaction, impoverished third world countries are poorly equipped educate their people about the serious dangers that accompany the wonderful pleasures of casual, unprotected sex. In Sudan, for instance, thousands die every day for want of inexpensive prophylactics. In Rwanda, AIDS is the second leading cause of death next to being burned alive and hacked into itty-bitty pieces by gangs of machete-wielding maniacs.

Yet Bush does nothing.

On Dumbya’s watch, AIDS has grown into such a horrible epidemic that Hollywood actors have chosen it over gonorrhea and syphilis as their sexually transmitted cause du jour. That bright red ribbon pinned to Gwyneth Paltrow’s fabulous Bob Mackie evening gown is a wake-up call for Bush and his Halliburton Buddies to stop sitting on their hands while billions more perish needlessly.

N.C. carries out nation's 1,000th execution

RALEIGH, N.C. - A convicted murderer was put to death Friday in the nation’s 1,000th execution since capital punishment resumed in 1977.

Kenneth Lee Boyd, who was convicted of killing his estranged wife and father-in-law, received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m.

“The execution of Kenneth Boyd has not made this a better or safer world,” his attorney Thomas Maher said. “If this 1,000th execution is a milestone, it’s a milestone we should all be ashamed of.” (STFU loser!)

In his final words, Boyd asked his daughter-in-law to take care of his son and grandchildren and said, “God bless everybody in here.”

His death came after both Gov. Mike Easley and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene and stop the execution.

About 150 protesters gathered at the prison in Raleigh, where prison officials tightened security. Police arrested 16 protesters late Thursday who sat down on the prison’s four-lane driveway, officials said.

Brutal slayings
Boyd, 57, did not deny that he shot and killed Julie Curry Boyd, 36, and her father, 57-year-old Thomas Dillard Curry. Family members said Boyd stalked his estranged wife after they separated following 13 stormy years of marriage and once sent a son to her house with a bullet and a threatening note.

During the 1988 slayings, Boyd’s son Christopher was pinned under his mother’s body as Boyd unloaded a .357-caliber Magnum into her. The boy pushed his way under a bed to escape the barrage. (Poor kids) Another son grabbed the pistol while Boyd tried to reload.

The Supreme Court in 1976 ruled that capital punishment could resume after a 10-year moratorium. The first execution took place the following year, when Gary Gilmore went before a firing squad in Utah.

Boyd told The Associated Press in a prison interview that he wants no part of the infamous numerical distinction. “I’d hate to be remembered as that,” Boyd said Wednesday. “I don’t like the idea of being picked as a number.” (Oh well, you won't have to live with it.)

The 1,001st could come Friday night, when South Carolina plans to put Shawn Humphries to death for the 1994 murder of a store clerk.

In Boyd’s plea for clemency, his attorneys said he served in Vietnam where he was shot at by snipers daily, which contributed to his crimes.

'One mistake'
As the execution drew near, Boyd was visited by a son from a previous marriage, who was not present during the slayings.

“He made one mistake and now it’s costing him his life,” said Kenneth Smith, 35, who visited with his wife and two children. “A lot of people get a second chance. I think he deserves a second chance.” (WTF? One mistake, yeah like running a red light huh? STFU!)

In his final statement, Boyd spoke to Smith’s wife, asking her to “look after my son and my grandchildren.”

Smith’s wife witnessed the execution, along with Thomas Curry’s niece and her husband. Maher, a small group of law enforcement officials and journalists also watched through the thick, twin glass panes between the viewing room and the stark death chamber.

I understand being in debt sucks but...

Insurance investigators finger former nail designer

SALZBURG, Austria - Prosecutors say a former fingernail designer deliberately put his hands under a passing train, severing a thumb and two fingers, to collect an insurance policy.

The 35-year-old, whose name was withheld because of Austrian privacy laws, was charged with insurance fraud.

The suspect told police he was riding his bicycle in November 2003 when he lost control and rolled down an embankment. He said he rolled onto the tracks just as a train was passing by, losing a thumb on one hand and an index finger and a pinky on the other.

Insurance investigators became suspicious after discovering the man had taken out a $1.17 million policy a few months earlier.

Attorney Karl Wampl said it was outlandish that his client would intentionally mutilate himself on the tracks, contending he could have used a power saw to cut off his fingers rather than risk death by faking a train accident.

The suspect has said he had accumulated about $175,000 in debts at the time he lost the fingers, prosecutors said.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison, authorities said.

Baby, you make my "love molecule" soar!

ROME (Reuters) - Your heartbeat accelerates, you have butterflies in the stomach, you feel euphoric and a bit silly. It's all part of falling passionately in love -- and scientists now tell us the feeling won't last more than a year.

The powerful emotions that bowl over new lovers are triggered by a molecule known as nerve growth factor (NGF), according to Pavia University researchers.

The Italian scientists found far higher levels of NGF in the blood of 58 people who had recently fallen madly in love than in that of a group of singles and people in long-term relationships.

But after a year with the same lover, the quantity of the 'love molecule' in their blood had fallen to the same level as that of the other groups.

The Italian researchers, publishing their study in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, said it was not clear how falling in love triggers higher levels of NGF, but the molecule clearly has an important role in the "social chemistry" between people at the start of a relationship.

Who Will Hit U.S. TV

Burton Cromer—vice president of BBC Direct, which is releasing the first season of the British SF series Doctor Who on DVD—told SCI FI Wire that the BBC made the unusual decision to release the DVD before the show had found a broadcast outlet in the United States. But he added that the show will find its way onto American TV one way or another.

"It will be going on television," Cromer said in an interview. "There're lots of discussions going on, and I can't really talk about that. This is a unique situation, really, because there are so many fans of Doctor Who ... already out there, and we were just finding [that] people were getting ... second-hand copies or copies from the U.K. ... We really wanted fans to get the best, most complete version in the United States as [soon] we possibly could. So we made the decision, and it is unique, to go ahead of the TV broadcast with the DVD and to release the gift set of the DVD basically within two and a half to three months [after] the U.K. [version]."

Since its premiere earlier this year, the updated Doctor Who has been a smash hit in Great Britain, and U.S. fans have been clamoring for a way to see the series legally Stateside. There's no downside to a U.S. DVD release, even if the show has yet to be seen on American TV, Cromer added. "The good news for us is that we already have that loyal fan base, but then when the show does broadcast in the U.S., we'll have a whole new fan base, because it's just a new Doctor Who: very exciting, but still the great stories and as great as the old Doctor Who," he said.

Doctor Who is gearing up production of its second season in the United Kingdom, which will appear next year. A special Christmas episode, meanwhile, will air this month. The U.S. DVD will feature the entire first season of Doctor Who, starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. It hits stores on Feb. 14, 2006.
